How To Recover From a Sprained Ankle

R.I.C.E. Method

If you are experiencing a sprained ankle, the R.I.C.E. method is great for treating your injury.  The R.I.C.E. method stands for resting, icing, compressing, and elevating.

  • Rest: The first step in this method involves avoiding activities that may aggravate your injury.  The ankle needs time to heal, and rest is necessary.
  • Ice: By applying ice you may be able to reduce your pain and the swelling that is currently occurring.
  • Compress: Compressing the injury can also reduce swelling as well as stabilize the injured joint.  
  • Elevate: The final step in this method is to elevate the ankle. This reduces swelling and the chance of increased bruising.
